Perthshire is one of Scotland's most popular areas for tourism and offers a great variety of attractions for visitors. The northern area is mountainous with many 'Munros' to attract the Munro Baggers but also offering a variety of easier hils and upland walks for the less energetic visitor. The mountainous nature of the countryside has created many of Perthshire's most dramatic and beautiful lochs such as Loch Earn, Loch Tay, Loch Katrine and loch Lomond.
The more southerly parts of Perthshire abound in tourist attractions such as historical sites, museums, wildlife centres and water based activities. Cycling has always been a popular activity and this is catered for by several cycle hire centres and miles of cycle tracks, with mostly easy gradients, which allow exploration of lochsides, quiet glens, secluded forests and dramatic elevated routes such as the routes over the Duke's Pass and the challenging GlenFinglas route.
Hotels in Perthshire , Scotland and the Trossachs in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs national park are available in a huge variety to meet the requirements of most holidaymakers. The largest concentrations of hotels are in Callander in Perthshire and are easily accessed and convenient for the highlands and national park, and Balloch, the busier centre by the railway station at the south end of Loch Lomond.
Hotel grading systems
Most hotels in Callander and the Trossachs subscribe to one or more of the quality grading schemes, the most common being that operated by 'Visit Scotland' or the old 'Scottish Tourist Board'. The STB scheme uses the following 'star' rating system
Fair & acceptable
Good
Very good
Excellent
Exceptional - world class.
Other grading systems are operated by other organisations such as the AA, RAC and the 'Crown' grading system, all of which follow similar format to that of the 'star' system. You may also come across the terms: APPROVED, COMMENDED, HIGHLY COMMENDED or DELUXE, the meanings of which are self evident.
What is the difference between a B&B and a hotel?
Bed and Breakfasts are very different from hotels. Every room in a B&B may be
different in size, layout, and decor. Meals may be eaten in the family eating area. A
B&B may not provide the privacy (or the loneliness) of a hotel; yet some luxurious
suites and converted outbuildings are very private indeed. Some B&B establishments may
even offer dining facilities compatible to those found in hotels.
A hotel is more likely to provide a consistent service where the rooms are likely (but not
necessarily) to have a consistent theme or decor, identical furnishing and these days,
almost always en-suite.A hotel will also have a dining room set aside for guests and will
usually offer an 'all meals' service.
